Psychology

Established in 1974, the Psychology program at the Federal University of Paraíba offers two distinct qualifications: Psychologist Training and Teaching Degree. Under the “Psychologist Training” track, the program aims to develop psychologists with critical thinking skills and a solid theoretical foundation to engage across various contexts. These professionals are committed to bioethics and strive to enhance comprehensive education and mental health on both individual and societal levels. Alternatively, in the “Teaching Degree” track, the program focuses on preparing Psychology educators (Licensees) equipped with critical-reflexive abilities and theoretical depth to excel in educational environments, contributing to holistic education and mental health promotion for individuals and communities.

Both paths aim to develop the following general competences:

● Health Care: Professionals must possess the capability to undertake actions for health prevention, promotion, protection, and rehabilitation, catering to both individual and community needs. They are expected to deliver services at the highest quality standards while adhering to ethical principles and bioethics.

● Decision Making: Professionals must base their actions on the assessment, systematization, and selection of the most suitable courses of action, grounded in scientific evidence.

● Communication: Professionals must uphold confidentiality when interacting with other healthcare providers and the public, ensuring the privacy of entrusted information.

● Leadership: In multidisciplinary teamwork, professionals should demonstrate leadership qualities, always prioritizing the well-being of the community.

● Administration and Management: Professionals should demonstrate initiative, adeptness in managing human and material resources, and proficiency in information handling. Additionally, they should be prepared to assume entrepreneurial, managerial, supervisory, or leadership roles within their teams.

● Continuous Education: Professionals must engage in lifelong learning, actively participating in the education and training of future professionals while promoting academic and professional mobility, education, and collaboration through national and international networks.

To facilitate the development of these competences, the program boasts a faculty comprising educators actively involved in Teaching, Research, and Extension activities across various psychological domains.
